Northampton and Monroe counties contributed the land for Carbon County. The county was founded on March 13, 1843. The name comes from carbon, the basic element of the area’s rich anthracite coal deposits. The famous names in Carbon County history are Asa Packer and Jim Thorpe.
Asa Packer was the most prominent citizen ever to come from Carbon County. He made his millions in coal mining and shipping. He may be best know as the founder of Lehigh University, one of the nations finest college institutions. Jim Thorpe was a famous Olympic Gold Medalist, who is buried in Jim Thorpe.
