County history are Jacob Stroud and General John Sullivan.

 

     Jacob Stroud is considered the founding father of Monroe County and was a prominent businessman. General John Sullivan was appointed by George Washington and was known for bringing peace to the region by driving many indian tribes out of Monroe County just after the Revolutionary War.

 

     Monroe County has a section of the Appalachian Trail running through the county at the Delaware Water Gap. The Delaware Water Gap is known as “The Gateway to the Poconos” and has more than 10,000,000 visitors going to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area each year. It’s a 70,000 acre park along the Delaware River that features some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the east.    

 

      Stroudsburg is the county seat for Monroe County and is best known for their shopping centers and outlets.
