Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is administered by the National Park Service and preserves more than 67,000 acres of land along the Delaware River. It is considered part of the eastern boundary of the Pocono Mountains.
The park was originally conceived to build a 37 mile long lake and dam to be used for hydroelectric power back in the 1960’s. Thousands of properties were purchased by the Army Corps of Engineers through eminent domain, but because of massive environmental issues, the project was scrapped and the government turned the property over the National Park Service.
Today, the recreation area runs from the northern outskirts of Milford south 40 miles to the Delaware Water Gap at Mount Tammany and Mount Minsi. Within its borders are Milford and Smithfield Beaches, and more than 100 miles of hiking trails - with 27 miles along the Appalachian Trail. There are historical villages, campground sites and many other recreational activities. The park is probably best known for having some of the best waterfalls in the eastern United States, including Raymondskill Falls and Dingman’s Falls.
North of Milford is a 73 mile stretch of free flowing river waters with many sections of whitewater. It is called the Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River. One section of the Delaware River, Skinner’s Falls, has more “whitewater” than any other section of the entire 330 miles of river. The river itself is the park. Except for some land at the Roebling Bridge and the home of Zane Grey in Lackawaxen, almost all of the riverbanks are privately owned. Along the Upper Delaware is where you will find the best kayaking, river tubing and canoeing.
