Of the four counties that make up the Pocono Mountains, Wayne County was the first to be established and cut off from Northampton County. Wayne County was formed on March 2, 1798 and named after Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. The most famous names in Wayne County history are Philip Hone, Lyman Lemnitzer and Christian Dorflinger.
Philip Hone was a former Mayor of New York City and founder of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, the largest corporation in the United States at that time, and headquartered in Honesdale. General Lyman Lemnitzer was a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff appointed by President John F. Kennedy, and also served as NATO Commander in Europe.

Honesdale is the county seat for Wayne County and is the birthplace of the American Railroad. It is the home of the first steam locomotive in the United States built in 1829.
Wayne County is best known for is recreational activities at Lake Wallenpaupack, with fishing, hunting, skiing, biking, rafting, and much more.
